Undoubtedly the world’s largest consumer electronics show, CES is a great indicator of where the IoT market is heading and what we can expect to see in the coming 2-3 years. Out of about 4500 exhibitors at CES 2020, more than 1000 companies were “internet of things” related, including smart home and city solution providers, wearables vendors, sensors, biometrics, and vehicle automation firms. The DSR team attended the show, and we are excited to share some of our impressions.

The origin of Blockchain can be traced back to the 90’s, ancient for the world of IT, but the technology only recently gained traction due to the success of Bitcoin. The global smart home market is forecast to grow to 53.45 billion U.S. dollars by 2022 and one of the key drivers of home automation adoption is easy-to-install and easy-to-use solutions like UK-based Wondrwall.

Our blockchain team attended the Hyperledger Bootcamp in Moscow this past week. Alexander Sherbakov spoke on distributed ledgers, Nikita Khateev spoke on Hyperledger Indy usage in IoT, Sergey Minaev and Artem Ivanov introduced the audience to Rust, a multi-paradigm programming language focused on safety, and Sergey Khoroshavin shared his experience with distributed systems testing.

DSR was proud to announce the NEW Z-Gate Dongle, created with our hardware partners, at this year's IBC in Amsterdam. This USB stick transforms existing STB boxes or routers into Zigbee Smart Home Gateways. This dongle works with an ecosystem of more than 200 Zigbee devices from 40 Zigbee device manufacturers.

We were excited to visit CEDIA this year to see all of the latest smart home innovation in our own, Denver backyard. It was good to see our Flyfish Gateway in use with Legrand products at their booth and to see all of the new IoT innovations on display.

DSR sponsored the Zigbee Alliance Member Meeting in Porto. It was a pleasure to have the ZA come together in one of our own backyards. We are always excited about the growth of the IoT ecosystem. CEO Anatoli Pechkov received an award on behalf of Kip Meacham for DSR’s contribution as thought leaders within Zigbee Alliance and the greater ecosystem.

DSR Corporation announces its partnership with Nordic Semiconductor. DSR’s ZBOSS 3.0 Zigbee 3.0 software stack is part of the Nordic offering for the multiprotocol nRF53840 SoC.  ZBOSS software was formally certificated by the Zigbee Alliance in September of 2018 as a Zigbee 3.0 compliant platform.

Every year we make our way to CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas for the annual consumer electronics exhibition. Imagine over 4,500 vendors presenting new ideas and technological developments spread across an entire week — it really does give a whole new meaning to the city of lights. CES presents a great opportunity to meet like-minded individuals in similar fields, or different, helping catch new ideas, contacts, and ideas – it’s wonderful here.

A bit of history — the creation of Zigbee standard required a lot of effort, time and knowledge to construct. Dotdot is an alias for ZCLIP, which stands for Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL) over IP. It is about exposing ZCL functionality to the IP world, in contrast to classic Zigbee that is always isolated from IP networks and requires a Zigbee gateway to connect Zigbee mesh with the outer world. This would become a bridge between IoT and other networks. Different manufacturers have Zigbee Gateway solutions mostly for connectivity of Zigbee network with cloud.

DSR Corporation (DSR) today announces its partnership with Nordic Semiconductor, to bring the power of Zigbee to more developers around the world. Every year CES is the culmination of the latest and greatest in technology and invention. At the end of last year, a group of researchers from Cognosec presented their “ZigBee exploited” report at the BlackHat conference in the USA. Based on the forecast that there will be 29 billion of IoT devices in the not so far 2020, “experts” convinced their readers that it is not the problem of the future but the present and that all devices are vulnerable. Now when the panic has calmed down, let’s see what happened in terms of ZigBee.

Nowadays most people have heard about hybrid mobile app frameworks and their advantages. There are so many of them and each promises everything you dreamed about for a cross-platform mobile applications development. The idea is nice and simple: hosting a web application inside of the user’s smartphone or tablet with the ability to have a single codebase, involve web developers, reduce costs, decrease time-to-market, and so on. However, we can see that most of the mobile applications are still native and platform specific. Why is that? Experienced developers (especially those who had a really hard time working with early hybrid applications) may notice that the real life cross-platform mobile app development process is far from perfect to make it a standard. The ZigBee 3.0 standard was recently ratified by the ZigBee Alliance in December 2015. ZBOSS 3.0 is part of DSR’s IoTicity™ portfolio of products and services supporting numerous IoT applications and development efforts.

Interoperability is a buzzword that we hear often when talking about wireless protocols, including ZigBee. Being an already trusted but still young standard, ZigBee itself can raise many questions when reading the official documentation. However, that is not the topic of this blog. With over a decade of experience in wireless communications software development and 7 years working closely with ZigBee, we have seen many cases where although the specification gives adequate description, developers invent their own bicycle. We have been creating mobile solutions for our customers for almost a decade. But with each project's experience come interesting challenges. Recently, we developed an iPhone application that is now available in the Apple Store. It required us to determine a user's location at various points using GPS. It turned out that in developing GPS-based mobile applications, the accuracy of the coordinates can vary. These inaccuracies appear on the screen as sudden jumps in a user's location on the map and are especially visible if the application is trying to plot a route that the user is traveling. These inaccuracies are the result of not discarding bad coordinate points and not detecting fluctuation of points in a route.
