Laboratory Information Management System

Background

Founded in 1985, LabWorks is a leader in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) industry and serves more than 500 laboratories worldwide. From small single-user labs to extensive facilities with geographically dispersed locations the company caters to labs of all sizes. The company’s eLIMS software is comprehensive and provides users with the functionality and tools to manage and automate key laboratory including full sample/analysis, inventory, project and customer management.

The company recognized the immediate need to modernize its eLIMS and envisioned a flexible, user-friendly platform on the market that would provide its customers with laboratory-specific configurations, automation and analytics, and remote and mobile access to users. Integrating modern workflows into the old platform was difficult and costly, resulting in LabWorks seeking DSR’s expertise to develop and maintain a modern out-of-the-box system requiring less customization by the customer. LabWorks’ goal was to refresh the user experience and integrate their 20 years of legacy code into modern workflows. It was vital that the gradual migration of the codebase would allow for backwards compatibility and interoperability between the new and legacy solutions to maintain users’ data.

The Solution

DSR’s depth and breadth of experience in workflow and content management systems enabled the engineers to quickly understand the complexities of the eLIMS workflow and the engineers worked closely with LabWorks customers to understand their needs. DSR created a new, intuitive experience for the UI/UX and workflows, modernized the backend, frontend and legacy code base for core LIMS components. DSR upgraded the system by achieving backwards compatibility between the legacy browsers and desktop applications.

After modernizing LabWorks’s eLIMS codebase and UI/UX for desktop and mobile uses, the team provided world-class QA and automated testing services for system-level functionality, interoperability and backwards compatibility. DSR then implemented system deployment procedures based on AZURE.
