DSR Showcases a Blockchain Access Control System Using Zigbee IoT Stack

Most think of it for securing cryptocurrency transactions, but blockchain is making great progress toward practical applications in a whole new variety of industries – from healthcare to supply chain management. Due to its’ decentralized nature, blockchain is one of the most efficient ways to protect users’ privacy while keeping access control solutions convenient and secure. DSR Corporation’s engineers have created a demo video showcasing a blockchain IoT security scenario using the ZigBee IoT stack.

DSR demonstrates how to set up an easy-to-use access control system for the guests of a hotel using blockchain technology, an  IoT Gateway, and a user’s mobile phone with and designated app installed. In this case, they are operating a lock that might be found on applications such as a hotel minibar.

The showcased access control solution has couple of undeniable benefits, enabled by blockchain integration with the IoT system:

  1. Thanks to a zero-knowledge proof, the verifier receives only required and non-specific information about the user. In this case, only the proof that the user is old enough to access alcohol is provided, rather than exposing any of their specific or private information.
  2. The showcased access control system does not require direct communication between the prover and authority (credential issuer). The zero-knowledge proof can be verified by the verifier (minibar) via the blockchain. The issuer can even be offline, but verification will still work.

Blockchain makes it possible to create secure and sophisticated access control rules, while also ensuring the security of sensitive data, all while eliminating the need for central server.
